Moments of reflection

There are times in our lives when time seems to stand still. Fractured images of who we once were hover just beyond our reach and we simply stop. For me, these days are infrequent in their occurrence now and I am closer to being able to say: “My name is Lar MacGregor, and I am happy”….  Now, I do not want you thinking I am unhappy. This would be an inaccurate assumption. I am in that space between. That space where the cerebral activity is such that I am still prone to thinking too much, but I do not think nearly so much as I used to…. Happy is just around the corner. So close I can almost touch it in fact, but I am not there yet….

So how do I translate this feeling into something visual? Well, I began by looking at “The Space Between” in relation to the environment I inhabit. The space between healing and healed where self doubt and isolation still linger and leave us feeling alone in a crowded room. Those cracks, crevices, nooks and crannies that are ever present in our surroundings and yet they very often go unnoticed.

It is all about perception. I am exploring the possibility of creating art that would draw attention to those unseen spaces by using light, whilst at the same time encouraging the viewer to connect with the concept that it is our perception and our interactions with a space that is transformative. Our cultural filters inform our beliefs and if we can challenge the value judgements that we make in our society, we can challenge the stigma surrounding depression and improve our recovery and healing through self-empowerment.

Reflected Light

Reflected light draws the eye and adds a new dimension to a given location and by using mirrors I aim to examine how we re-evaluate not only the immediate surroundings and how we feel within them, but how our very identity is woven into cultural roots without our being aware of it. Friedrich Nietzsche states ” Even a thought, even a possibility, can shatter us and transform us.”   Friedrich Nietzsche. (1999). Friedrich Nietzsche Quotes. For me the challenge and the motivation is always to enable people to connect or reconnect with the possibility that we can transform ourselves.
